PORTO SANTO STEFANO
Our day starts in Porto Santo Stefano, a picturesque fishing village known for its bustling harbor and maritime charm.
“Kick things off with a classic Italian breakfast at a local Bar. Sip your espresso slowly and savor a freshly baked cornetto (croissant) while soaking in the seaside atmosphere.”
Crowning the hill with its regal poise, the 17th-century Fortezza Spagnola (Spanish Fortress) stands as a testament to Porto Santo Stefano’s maritime heritage. Originally erected to fend off pirates, today it serves as a historical museum, offering stunning views of the harbor and a treasure trove of artifacts.
Access to Fortezza Spagnola will require tickets that can be bought on-site. You can find all the information on their official website.
Visit the Chiesa di Santo Stefano (Church of Saint Stephen), a 17th-century church, that graces the town with its elegant façade and an interior adorned with intricate frescoes and sculptures, symbol of both spiritual devotion and artistic excellence.
Before leaving Porto Santo Stefano, we need a quick stop at la Piazzetta, a picturesque square surrounded by charming cafes, delectable restaurants, and inviting boutiques. Here, you can savor delicious Italian cuisine while absorbing the town’s lively ambiance.

Now hop in your car and set your GPS for the scenic coastal drive to Cala del Gesso. This journey is an adventure, as you wind your way along the coastal road, catching glimpses of the dazzling Tyrrhenian Sea at every turn. Don’t forget to stop at the viewpoint for a few Instagram-worthy snapshots!
As you drive through Monte Argentario, you’ll reach the small parking next to the road that descends to Cala del Gesso, your gateway to paradise.
CALA DEL GESSO
Cala del Gesso is a hidden location, so you need to discover it by walking up and down the hill that brings you to this slice of heaven on earth!
NOTE: The hike trail is easy but requires walking up and down the hill to reach the cove, but it’s worth every step!
Once we park the car, we need to walk for around 20 minutes on the road to Cala del Gesso with the sight of the secluded beach cradled by limestone cliffs, that will take your breath away!
As you reach the beach, you will find a haven of tranquility where the turquoise waters invite you for a refreshing swim or a lazy day of sunbathing. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of waves make it the ultimate relaxation spot.

After relaxing at Cala del Gesso, we will climb the hill up to the parking and return to the car.
It is time to catch a beautiful sunset panorama from the Tower of Capo d’Uomo.
TORRE CAPO D’UOMO
The Capo d’Uomo Tower is a coastal tower at an elevation of approximately 350 meters above sea level, with the summit of the hill that rises in the western part of the Argentario promontory, providing stunning panoramic views of the sea.
We will park our car in the small parking near the Poggio Fornacelle, (the exact location of the parking is pointed out in the Google Maps Itinerary).
NOTE: Be prepared for a moderately challenging hike to reach the summit of Torre Capo D’Uomo, but you will get the best views of Monte Argentario.
Here starts the trail hike that takes you to one of the most stunning viewpoints on Monte Argentario.
It takes about 1 hour walking to complete the loop around Poggio Fornacelle. You’ll walk along the ridge, go over Poggio Fornacelle, and ascend a steep slope to reach Capo d’Uomo Tower. This historic old stone tower on a cliff offers a historic and scenic backdrop.
We suggest beginning the hike at least one hour before sunset. This way, you’ll have enough daylight for your walk to the summit and back to your car.
